$80 million investment for the Port of Burnie

Burnie City Council welcomes today's announcement that Tasports will be progressing its Master Plan for the Port of Burnie

Burnie City Council Mayor Boyd said "the investment by Tasports of around $80 million here in the Port of Burnie will increase the freight capacity in Tasmania's primary container port and includes a proposed international container terminal.

"The investment by Tasports will not only significantly grow the Port, it will also support projected business and industry growth not only in our region, but across Tasmania.

Mayor Boyd said he is "very excited about the flow on benefits for tourism in Burnie and throughout the region. The investment will improve cruise ship facilities and will enable more ships to visit."

The increased sea freight capacity and berth extension will accommodate larger Bass Strait container and cargo vessels which are expected to arrive in 2019; and a new international container terminal will attract direct trade with Asia and double activity at the port.
