100th cruise ship to visit Burnie

There are two cruise ships left to visit Burnie for 2011.

Mayor Steve Kons said, “Tomorrow (Friday 23 December 2011) a smaller cruise ship named the Spirit of Adventure will arrive in Burnie. This is the ship’s maiden visit to Burnie carrying approximately 520 passengers and crew.”

On Tuesday, 27 December 2011 the Celebrity Century will arrive in Burnie.

“This too is the ship’s first visit to Burnie. The arrival of the Celebrity Century also marks the 100th cruise ship to visit Burnie.

“It’s a big ship with the capacity to have over 3000 passengers and crew exploring our region.

“With the cruise ships continuing to visit our city, it has really cemented the huge change that Burnie has seen over the last decade. When the ships first started to visit Burnie, we only ever had one or two a year. This season we have 18.

“The visitors are spreading the word that Burnie has changed. It’s great to have so many people see how far we have come and rave to their family and friends around the world about the clean and vibrant city in Tasmania called Burnie.

“I am really enjoying greeting the cruise ships passengers as they arrive. It’s wonderful to hear their adventures and their thoughts of our city.

“They enjoy the cleanliness and beauty of Burnie and they are also amazed at the friendless of the people, especially our cruise ship volunteers. It’s a huge day when a cruise ship is in for our volunteers. They are guiding and on their feet all day helping every person who sets off the ship.

“I am sure that without their help and dedication we would not be celebrating this milestone,” Mayor Kons said.

This season the 18 cruise ships are estimated to bring a $6 million economic boost to the region.
