Mayor Anita Dow

Mayor Anita Dow

This week I resigned from Local Government after 12 years to contest the upcoming State Election as a Labor Candidate.

These years have seen many changes with highlights for me being the Waterfront renewal, Makers’ Workshop, chairing Making Burnie 2030 and Burnie Works, and seeing programs such as Dream Big, BIG and Everyday Counts all aimed at promoting education and lifting the aspirations of our young people.

Closely linked is the UTAS West Park project which I believe will have significant long term benefits for Burnie and the north-west through economic activity, international relationships, access to tertiary education, innovation and research in our key industries, while remaining a fantastic community space. Recent initiatives include the new Aquatic Centre, CBD Masterplan, the expanding cycle-ways, Council’s plan to reduce rates over the next five years, and the port mooring dolphin enabling larger cruise ships to berth. Council continues to advocate for ongoing investment in our port, the Advanced Manufacturing sector and opportunities in Forestry downstream processing.

It has been an honour to serve as your Mayor and Deputy Mayor. I thank my fellow Aldermen and staff for their contributions and support. My 12 years in Local Government have enabled me to develop a good understanding of this region and the need for all levels of government to work together better. Thank you for the opportunity to represent Burnie as your Mayor and Alderman. It has been my great pleasure.

Playstreet Landscape Architects have been engaged by Council to conduct a community consultation session at Bayviews Restaurant on 1 November 2017 1-3pm to discuss ideas for a proposed Adventure Playground in Burnie.
