Works at the Bass Highway – West Park Grove intersection are now complete.
Mayor Steve Kons and the Hon David O’Byrne MP Minister for Infrastructure officially opened the new intersection this afternoon.
Mayor Kons said, “The previous entry and exit points to the precinct were inadequate for future development and this intersection upgrade has provided a long term safe access solution that integrates with the operation of the Bass Highway and provides for increased traffic volumes well into the future.
“The upgrade of the Bass Highway - West Park Grove Intersection has transformed a three-way intersection into a four-way intersection.
“I have been really impressed by the local contractors responsible for this project. Since October the works have run smoothly. The impact on the community has been kept to the absolute minimum.
“This is one of Burnie’s major intersections and potentially these works could have caused the whole community a real headache. The contractors had to accommodate Bass Highway traffic volumes of well over 22,000 vehicles a day. The project was challenging and complex, particularly in terms of underground services and construction sequencing.
“I would like to acknowledge GHD as the contract administration team and Shaw Contracting as the principle contractor on the project. In particular Shaw’s Project Manager Nic Broomhall and his local CBB Contracting team.
“Council Officers and DIER worked extremely hard on the design process and should be proud of the finished result and overall running of the project. From start to finish, this project has been well thought out and executed efficiently,” Mayor Kons said.
This project is another example of an excellent partnership between Burnie City Council and the State Government to deliver a $3.3 M infrastructure project including a $1.4 M state grant from the Urban Renewal and Heritage Fund.
