Beach Wheelchair and Liberty Swing access key

Beach-Wheelchair.jpg

There is a beach wheelchair at West Beach and a Liberty Swing at Burnie Park. A common access key provides access to both facilities.

The Liberty Swing allows children in wheelchairs the opportunity to experience the joy of having a swing in the park. It is the only swing of its type that is fully lockable and allows a maximum swing height – that is, really swinging, not just rocking back and forth.

Council encourages families to request a permanent key, so that they can enjoy the swing and or beach wheelchair at all times, Council provides a key free of charge to those families who require access.

Liberty Swing

The Liberty Swing was a joint project between Variety Children’s Charity, Burnie Emu Bay Lions Club and Burnie City Council.

Variety Children’s Charity helped source and secure a reconditioned swing. The offer of the reconditioned swing to the Burnie community made the cost to purchase the swing less than half of a new swing. Burnie Emu Bay Lions Club generously donated $5,000 to help secure the swing. Burnie City Council has contributed more than $30,000 to this project.

A Beach Wheelchair is available for use at Burnie's West Beach.

The Burnie Surf Life Saving Club can provide assistance to access the beach friendly wheelchair on West Beach waterfront during summer patrol hours 11am – 4pm Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays Nov-Mar.

If you would like to access the beach friendly wheelchair outside of these hours you may request your own free key by completing the form on this page, or from the City Offices during business hours.
